Parley: Terms of Use

1. Agreement

By installing or using Parley (the "app") you agree to these Terms of Use and to the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app. You must be old enough to enter into this agreement under the law where you live; the app is not directed at children under 13.

2. What the app does

Parley lets people talk and chat in online rooms (public and private), directly between nearby phones without internet ("Mesh" mode), and translate text on their own phone ("Tourist" mode and chat translation). You can add friends by QR code or link and call them to a private room. You can sign in with a Solana wallet or continue as a guest. The app never has access to your wallet keys.

3. Your account and wallet

A guest session or a wallet connection identifies you in rooms by a display name. You are responsible for your device, your wallet and your passphrases. Anyone who knows the passphrase of a private room can join it, so share it only with people you trust. Wallet actions, including any voluntary donation, are made in your wallet app; blockchain transactions are public, irreversible and outside our control.

4. Your conduct

You agree not to use the app to harass, threaten or abuse others, to share illegal content, to impersonate others (the name of the app, and names that imitate it, are reserved for the owner of the app and are refused for display names and room names), to send spam, to interfere with the service or to try to access rooms or data that are not yours. You are responsible for what you say and write. Room owners can remove people from their rooms, and anyone can block or report another person from the message menu. We may restrict access to the online service for people who break these rules.

5. Content and privacy of rooms

Voice and text in private rooms are end-to-end encrypted with a key derived from the room passphrase. The text and the voice of online rooms are kept briefly by our database provider (Google Firebase) so that they can be delivered and played again: the voice for 5 minutes, the text up to 24 hours in a public room and about 1 minute in a private room, and they are deleted at once when you delete your message (see the Privacy Policy). Public rooms are not private: anyone in the room can hear and read what you send, and a person who enters a public room can read the messages of the last 24 hours and play the talks of the last 5 minutes. A public room created by a user stays open while people are in it; an empty one closes after 24 hours (after 3 hours if nobody except its creator ever joined).

6. Translation and dictation

Translation and speech recognition are automatic and can be wrong. Do not rely on them for medical, legal, safety-critical or other important matters without checking the result. Translation runs on your phone; speech recognition is provided by your phone's speech service (Google), which may process audio according to its own terms.

7. Availability

The app is free and provided as it is. Online rooms depend on third-party services and your internet connection; Mesh mode depends on your phone's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings, on Android 13 or newer, and on distance. We do not guarantee that the service will always be available, error-free or uninterrupted, and we may change or stop features.

8. No warranty and limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the app is provided "AS IS" without warranties of any kind, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost data, losses from blockchain transactions, network downtime, translation or recognition errors, or the conduct of other users. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

9. Changes

We may update these terms and the policy; the date at the top shows the latest version. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept it.
